To commit yourself to learning new skills and being brave enough to write exams to prove that you have learned these, is highly commendable and the institution that trains you, owes it to you to maintain a high level of integrity and ethical standards among all those who write their courses. The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers has been offering an exemplary level of tuition since 1911 and its members are held in high regard throughout the maritime industry. The credibility of any training institution, from schools all the way up to universities, rests not just with the standard of education given, but with the students who progress through their doors and the ethics they display.
The Institute has firmly established itself as one of the world’s premier maritime training facilities. This is because the students who have previously written the exams have held firmly to the motto Our word, Our Bond. Passing the exams does not entitle you to become a
member, you must also be held in high esteem by others in the industry who will be required to propose and second you for membership.
Cheating at any level throughout your training is not acceptable. It lessens the value of the qualification for all who have come before you and to all who will look to write the exams in the future. It is for this reason that we must ensure that any form of cheating is dealt with swiftly and effectively. This means that even people attempting the entry course, Understanding Shipping, are expected to display a high standard of ethics. Failure to do so will not only result in you failing this course, but it may also preclude you from being permitted to write the Foundation Diploma, or to be accepted as full member of the Institute.
Membership of the Institute (MIC5) is achieved by candidates passing the professional Qualifying Examinations and satisfying the UK Controlling Council of their suitability. Fellowship (FIC5) applications are accepted from Members holding a position of seniority who have been engaged in the business or profession of a shipbroker for 6 years. On promotion, Fellows are entitled to call themselves a Chartered Shipbroker.
