The Advanced Diploma (DP) is a mid-level qualification offered by The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), designed for professionals who have already gained some experience or foundational knowledge in the maritime industry. Positioned between the Foundation Diploma and the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE), the DP focuses on enhancing technical skills and applying theoretical knowledge to real-world shipping scenarios.
The course typically requires candidates to complete two modules: one compulsory subject—usually “Introduction to Shipping” or “Shipping Business”—and one elective from a wide range of specialized fields, such as Marine Insurance, Dry Cargo Chartering, or Port Agency. The program is flexible, allowing participants to study via distance learning while continuing their careers.
Upon successful completion, candidates are awarded the Advanced Diploma and can progress directly to the PQE. The DP is ideal for those looking to deepen their maritime expertise, take on greater responsibilities, or work toward becoming a Chartered Shipbroker.
The entry-level requirements for the Advanced Diploma (DP) offered by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) are designed to ensure candidates have a solid grounding in shipping principles or relevant industry experience. Typically, applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria:
Completion of the Foundation Diploma (FD) or an equivalent introductory qualification in maritime studies.
Relevant work experience in the shipping, logistics, or maritime sectors (usually at least 1–2 years).
A background in business, trade, or logistics through academic study or employment.
Proficiency in English, as all course materials and exams are delivered in English.
While formal academic qualifications are not always mandatory, a demonstrable interest or involvement in maritime affairs is essential. The ICS may assess applicants individually to determine eligibility, ensuring that each candidate is suitably prepared for the more advanced topics covered in the diploma.
