The Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE) are the highest level of qualification offered by The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS). Aimed at professionals seeking to attain chartered status, the PQE consists of seven rigorous exams that must be successfully completed—comprising four compulsory subjects and three electives tailored to the candidate’s area of specialization within the maritime industry.
The PQE is internationally recognized and designed to assess not just theoretical knowledge but also the practical application of shipping practices, law, operations, and business strategy. These exams reflect real-world scenarios and demand a deep understanding of global shipping dynamics. Candidates typically take these exams over one to three years, depending on their level of preparation and available study time.
Upon completion, successful candidates are eligible to apply for membership with the ICS, earning the prestigious title of Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (MICS)—a respected mark of expertise and professionalism in the shipping industry.

Exemptions: Prior academic or professional maritime experience may lead to exemptions in select subjects—but not Shipping Business ShipConnector+1Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers+1.
Upon successful completion of all seven exams, candidates can apply for membership of the Institute, assuming they have a genuine connection to the commercial shipping industry.
